Kindle Fire HDX/HD2/8.9 Update 3.1 Ready to Roll

KindleFireHDupdateKindle Fire tablets will be getting an over the update to Fire 3.1. Models getting the update are Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX (7 & 8.9) Kindle Fire HD (2nd Gen) and Kindle Fire HD 8.9.

The update lets you:

  • Find and share books with Goodreads that lets you share and rate books on your Kindle Fire.
  • Organize your content library into collections.
  • Watch movies and TV shows on another device with Second Screen.
  • Dictate speech to text—available in all languages when online; offline support available in US English.
  • Fling movies a to your 2013 Samsung Smart TV or PlayStation 3 using Second Screen.
  • Smart Lookup--so you can quickly look up words in the dictionary or Wikipedia or translate text in a book.
  • Print Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, photos, e-mails, calendar events, and contact information from your Kindle Fire to a printer that supports mobile printing.
  • 1-Tap Archive for clould saving, your Kindle Fire groups all content that has not been used recently so you can move it to the Cloud with just one tap.
  • Manage security certificates.
  • Set alarms and view additional time zones with the Clock app.
  1. From your computer, download the software update file.
  2. Transfer the software update file to your Kindle Fire:
    1. Turn on your Kindle Fire and unlock the screen.
    2. Connect your Kindle Fire to your computer using the USB cable.
    3. Open the Kindle Fire drive (titled Kindle), and then drag and drop the software update file into the Internal storage folder.

      Note:

      • Do not drop the file into any other folder in Internal storage.
      • If you've installed the Android File Transfer application on your Mac OSX 10.5 or above computer, the application will automatically open when you connect your Kindle Fire to your computer.
  3. Monitor file transfer and disconnect: After the file transfer is complete, disconnect the USB cable from your Kindle Fire and your computer.
  4. Start the software update:
    1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, and then tap Settings.
    2. Tap Device, and then tap System Updates.
    3. Tap Update.

    Your Kindle Fire will restart during the software update. After the restart, the message "Installing system update" will appear on the screen.

Your Kindle Fire needs to be fully charged and connected to a Wi-Fi network before you can download the software update. This is an over-the-air update and may not be available right away.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Device, and then tap System Updates.
  3. Tap Check Now. If an update is available, your Kindle Fire will automatically download the update.
  4.  After you download the update, tap Update.

Your Kindle Fire will restart during the software update. After the restart, the message "Installing system update" will appear on the screen.
