New figures show that once again, after the new iPhone 5S and 5c models were launched, Apple's smartphones were the top sellers across carriers. The only other smartphone to top the charts is the Samsung Galaxy S4. Beside that analysts predict that Apple will continue to be the top smartphone maker of choice for Americans.
Let's look at the top sellers for three months from August to November 2013 according to Cannacord Genuity. See sales charts below.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 was second place at all carriers except AT&T in September, October and November. Samung's Galaxy S4 remained in third place for September and October until November with Black Friday discounts it went into second place.
The iPhone 5S was the best seller at all carriers for September through November.
Third place at all carriers except for AT&T where the SG 4 was number three for September and October, was the iPhone 5c for the three months.
Figures do not reveal how much of the sales were upgrade and how much the iPhone prices were subsidized. The current system in which the buyer pays around $199 for the current model iPhone has been in place since 2007 and many buyers are accustomed to waiting for the newest iPhone release. The only carrier where buyers pay full price is T-Mobile, where payments are made over a two-year period.
It's interesting to note that AT&T's CEO is hinting that smartphone subsidies may end and if and when they do, buyers may start shopping for better deals.
A new report from Asymco's Horace Dediu predicts that in 2017 that 68% of the U.S. smartphone population, American consumers more than 13-years-old will own iPhones or about 180 million American users.
Asymco's August data showed "U.S. adults are spending 19.4% of their time on mobile devices, compared with 19.2% on laptops and PCs"
