Assurance Wireless has changed their offering for free cell phones for low-income families in California and other states. Since mid-July it began offerign unlimited free voice and text minutes for eligible low-income families in California. It is called the California FREEdom Plan for those 26% of Californian that live below the federal poverty line.

The new plan replaces the 250 free voice/texts that was previously available. Current Assurance Wireless customers in California will be migrated to the California FREEdom Plan and automatically receive the additional benefits every month unless they choose to remain on their existing plan.

Assurance Wireless offers caller ID and access to 911 in case of emergency. Customers can also keep an existing cellphone number and move or “port” it to an Assurance Wireless account. Customer can buy low-cost options to purchase data and international calling at competitive rates.

Free cell phones for low-income households in California, only became available last year.

California residents may qualify for Assurance Wireless if they participate in certain public assistance programs, such as Medicaid, Medi-Cal or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). They may also qualify based on household income. Applicants must provide proof of program participation or proof of income when they submit the official California LifeLine Application form to the California LifeLine Administrator.

Those who already have Lifeline discounts on a landline can opt to port their number to a cell phone but will lose the Lifeline discount on the landline. Low income is as low as $24,700 for household of 1-2 people or those who receive public assistance.  Please note it does not mean that every family member can get a free cell phone.

Once that form has been submitted with the necessary paperwork and approved, applicants will receive a free Assurance Wireless phone [usually within 7-10 days].

Other states may only have 500 or 250 minute free plans.  Assurance Wireless is part of Virgin Mobile and uses the Sprint network

  1. I currently have an assurance phone and I am very happy about the service. My phones ear speaker is not working.
