The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates have designated September 10 – 16, 2012 as "National Telephone Discount Lifeline Awareness Week," in order to raise awareness of and participation in Lifeline at the federal and state level. Nationwide, Lifeline helps improve the quality of life for families in need by providing access to vital and basic phone connections.

Soldier Cell PhoneIn honor of the Fourth of July weekend we would like to honor our military and veterans by showing how you can support them and how they can get free cell phones as well as calling time minutes.  Low-income families of military personnel may also quality for free cell phones.

Some veterans who are batting the job market to get back to work may qualify for free low-income subsidized cell phones from  Assurance Wireless.

Those who are not in the military who want to help can send used cell phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers, a non-profit organization that provides pre-paid calling cards and free phone services to deployed and returning military members.

Assurance Wireless, offers low-income residents with a free cell phones.  It has announced  its one year anniversary of providing services to Kentucky residents. Assurance Wireless is a Lifeline Assistance program supported by the federal Universal Service Fund that offers 250 free minutes of wireless voice service and 250 free text messages monthly.

The program includes a voice mail account and call waiting, caller ID and access to 911 in case of emergency. Beyond the 250 free voice minutes each month, customers can choose from other low cost options to pay for additional minutes, texting, international calling and more at competitive rates.
