Lost PhoneCTIA-The Wireless Association released a public service announcement (PSA) video to help cell phone customers in case of  loss or theft.  The association also offered guidelines for actions before and after your phone is stolen or lost.  

A database that prevents stolen smartphones from being reactivated will be implemented by December 31, 2012, provided the phones have service in the U.S. by October 31, 2012.

AT&T, Cellcom, Nex-Tech Wireless, Sprint, Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless have deployed databases that use unique smartphone identifying numbers to prevent smartphones reported by their customers as stolen from being activated.  AT&T and T-Mobile USA have established connectivity to populate smartphones reported as stolen in the GSMA Global IMEI database for use by other carriers.

Stolen AT&T Cell Phone Help but Not iPhone, Android or Windows Phone

Carriers, recently signed an agreement to create a database of stolen phones to help stop the resale of stolen phones.  AT&T has launched a webpage for stolen phones while only offering advise to iPhone, Android and Windows Phone owners.

The webpage gives safety tips and tells customers what to do if a phone is lost or stolen.  users must log into their my AT&T account and suspend service. For prepaid GoPhones, AT&T off there's a toll-free number to call.

Examiners can draw a Google map of the route you took and the exact time you were there, down to the second using location data from an iPhone. The iPhone's location data is automatically captured by nearby cellphone towers and the carrier.

The data collection feature can only be stopped by turning off the phone's wireless transmit and receive features or setting the iPhone to airplane mode. However, the previously recorded data will still be there and will be recoverable. iPads use the same location tracking technology.

Android Apps Open to Exploits Even without Permission in Android 4.0 ICS

Android TheifAndroid apps even without permissions, can access data which could pose a security threat.  researcher  Paul Brodeur of Leviathan Security created an app that was able to find out all sorts of information about an Android device even without permission.

Brodeur created a ''No Permissions'' Android app that explores what data is available can be harvested from an Android device even when the installed app has no permissions.  The app was able to harvest data, open a browser and send the data over the web.
