The quality smartphone enthusiasts are learning right now is patience, patience for waiting for the iPhone 5 and now the Samsung Nexus (Droid) Prime. Samsung has cancelled the event scheduled at CTIA in San Diego next week. This postponement has one blogger "pissed" and others frustrated.
Carriers and smartphone makers no longer give a release date until the very last minute. As smartphones get more exciting and advanced there can more problems and longer waits. Let's see the HTC ThunderBolt was a few months late. The Droid Bionic was about nine months later than expected. The Samsung Galaxy S II in the United states was two months later than expected. Now the Nexus Prime aka the Droid Prime is not ready for prime time.
The unpacked event isn't going to be unpacked:
Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11. Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product. We would ask for the understanding of our clients and media for any inconvenience caused. We will announce a new date and venue in due course.
The ask for "understanding" and they are not getting any. Those of us who has attempted to write smartphone apps and lived through other breaking technology remember the days when a software update took a year or more.
We also understand that smartphone buyers are frustrated because you are married to a smartphone for two years and want to get the "right" one for you.
The Nexus Prime also called the Droid Prime is expected to have many advanced features. See Droid Nexus Prime video, photo and specs.
Clearly this is a point to grieve Steve Jobs. Google is doing the right thing here especially considering Jobs' memory is a monumental loss to the cell phone if not technology industry period. Google is waiting to grieve and that is beyond admirable. We should all be so lucky strangers would be willing to grieve for us if we passed.
Please note: There are two phones, the Droid Prime which is SCH-i515 heading for Verizon and the Nexus Prime which is GT-i9250 heading for AT&T and probably T-Mobile as well.
