The first update for the HTC ThunderBolt to Android 2.3 Gingerbread was pulled due to problems. HTC and Verizon have fixed the glitches and are now pushing out the update Over-the-Air (OTA) which has been officially confirmed by Verizon Wireless.
Here's the email statement, we received from Verizon Wireless spokesman Albert Aydin:
"Verizon Wireless has begun pushing a new software update for the ThunderBolt by HTC. The software updates the device to Gingerbread, Android 2.3. Customers can download the update by going to Settings > Software Update > Check New. "
The 2.11.605.5 update has many of the same features of the previous update with the addition of:
- Fixes the voicemail notification error.
- Improved security features that reduce device vulnerability.
- Bluetooth security patch has been included.
- Basic voicemail notification will now notify when a new voicemail has been received.
The list of features in the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update are impressive, with the addition of download manager, active app management, shortcuts, one-touch copy/paste, widgets, icons, app groups, updated calendar options, camera geotagging, improved email synching, and camera auto-focus improvements. Along with getting all the great features of Android 2.3 Gingerbread the update adds enhancements:improved security, better battery efficiency, better Bluetooth audio, enhanced roaming UI, desktop cradle support and fixes SMS misrouting problems.
Youu will be notified that a system update is available on your HTC ThunderBolt. Touch OK and the download will begin.It will take you approximately 20-40 minutes to download the software, depending on network conditions.. Installation should take up to 10-20 minutes additional. Keep in mind that during the installation you will be unable to make or receive calls, including emergency calls.
If you are roaming you will not receive a system update notice. You will need to enable Wi-Fi and wait for the update notice to appear.
HTC, this week, confirmed that they will HTC will determine which Android smartphones will get the update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich according to the hardware, performance and usability.
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich combines tablet and smartphone functions and adds advanced features to Android such as face unlock, multitasking and NFC(see all features).

For those whose Thunderbolts had already updated to Gingerbread, this update is much smaller, approximately 13MB. So it's evidentelly a patch, not a re-installation of Gingerbread.
Just downloaded and installed the update from Verizon. Official version = 2.3.4
fixes the camera on gtalk, too.
Let the update run this morning and the phone has been locking up and rebooting most of the day.
it was working fine before...now it sucks!
Skype loads & logs in. Created no instability problems from "normal" use. Possibly helped with data connectivity problems, but it's too soon to tell.
Too late, HTC. I had the Incredible and "stepped up" to the TBolt. I buy a new phone every year regardless of upgrade...and I'll never buy another HTC phone. The TBolt is really that bad.
