Samsung Nexus Prime Event Cancelled Due to Bad Taste? Samsung Galaxy S II-Like Faux Paus So Far?

Many wireless fans were disappointed that Samsung canceled the Google episode press event at CTIA in San Diego next week.  We have no way of knowing why they cancelled it.  However, we have noticed that Samsung has made some faux pas that are in bad taste which may have contributed to their decision.

Tuesday evening (around 5:00 pm),  after the iPhone 4S announcement, we received a comparison chart from the Samsung PR team comparing the Samsung Galaxy S II to the iPhone 4S.  Most news outlets were closed for the day.  Therefore, the comparison chart wound up being published in many news outlets on the day of Steve Jobs' death, Wednesday, October 5.

While the world was mourning the death of Apple's great visionary, Samsung was seen saying "The Samsung Galaxy S II is better than the iPhone 4S, nah, nah, nah, nah nah."

One of our readers suggested that Google and Samsung couldn't make their announcement of Android Ice Cream Sandwich and the Nexus Prime because it would outshine the iPhone 4S.  That could be the reason for the delay.

Update 10/10/11:  Business Insider received confirmation from a Google spokesperson "We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing."

Some believe that it could also be that Samsung and Google are not ready, yet.

The Nexus Prime is supposed be a Verizon LTE compatible smartphone.  This year, a majority of the 4G LTE smartphones for Verizon Wireless have been delayed including the HTC ThunderBolt, Droid Bionic and Samsung Droid Charge (the model the Nexus Prime is supposedly replacing).

Samsung had to delay its Samsung Galaxy S II event in New York due to Hurricane Irene.  There is no Hurricane in San Diego.  There could be a hurriance of bad press if the event was geared towards iPhone 4S comparisons.

We also noticed that Samsung doesn't understand how Americans can be offended.  A video that was supposed to promote the Samsung Galaxy S II launch event in New York compared the Samsung Galaxy S II series to many cultural icons including Buddha, Jesus Christ and the Statue of Liberty.  The video has been pulled from YouTube but we captured many of the offensive photos with screenshots.

Samsung does know how to make fast, Super AMOLED, high-powered smartphones, they just don't get the marketing.  Steve Jobs was a master of marketing with excellent media events in which he anounced products to cheering audiences.

We will be making comparisons when the whole controversy dies down in a Dare2Compare of all the super smartphones of fall. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S II is cheaper than the iPhone 4S when ordered from Amazon. The Samsung Epic 4G Touch, Sprint's latest Samsung Galaxy S II, received excellent reviews, while the iPhone 4S is selling out from Apple and many carriers.

Here are highlights of the comparison from Samsung:

  • Screen size benefits scale by AREA (length x width), not just diagonal;  the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II has 42% more screen area and Sprint / T-Mobile versions of Galaxy S II have 58% more screen area than the iPhone 4S.
  • The Galaxy S II HSPA+ network speeds are at least 50% faster with AT&T 21 MBPS and three times faster with T-Mobile’s 42 MBPS than the iPhone 4S’s 14 MBPS HSPA network.
  • Galaxy S II continues to have the thinnest smartphone design with the fastest network speed on each of the networks carrying the smartphone (AT&T, Sprint & T-Mobile) including today’s announcement of the iPhone 4S specs for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.
  • Open Ecosystem – Consumers can use the Galaxy S II to buy music from Amazon, Rhapsody, or a variety of other music services, as well as multiple cloud music services supported such as Amazon, Google Music and multiple video chat clients available for use including Google Chat and Skype. The Samsung Galaxy S II is not limited to a single manufacturer’s storefront or app store.

  1. We do know we Samsung and Google delayed, it was out of respect for Jobs. Nice call on their part.

    Android rules.
