  • Global internet usage through mobile devices, not including tablets*, has almost doubled to 8.5% in January 2012 from 4.3% last year according to free web analytics company StatCounter. Nokia leads worldwide, most probably driven by its dominance in India. Apple is second globally but leads the US and UK markets.
  • GigaOm is buying the assets of ContentNext Media from Guardian & Media Limited.
  • Vonage release a VOIP app for Android and iPhone. Calls and texts are free from mobile app to mobile app. Calls to phones are free for a limited time.
  • Visa announced the launch of mobile services that allow financial institutions to offer their account holders the ability to monitor account history and balances, transfer funds between accounts, and receive near real time transaction alerts on their mobile devices.
  • Strategy Analytics expects the average maximum download speed to exceed 15Mbps by mid-year and 20 Mbps by the end of 2012. Average data allowance will edge upward, toward a norm of at least 8GB
