Best Smartphones 2012 Review of Review ReviewsWiMo News is continuing its round-up of distilling the review sources for the year of 2012. Our ginormous database is crunching out numbers with the help of human formulas that reveals some trends and surprises.  So far Consumer Reports gave higher ranking to LG and Motorola, there were few if any keyboarded winners and sales figures from Canaccord Genuity do not reflect the reviews.  Today we look at Digital Trends that really likes Windows Phones.

Our data includes all the smartphones throughout the year.  We prorated their figures to be in similar context as other technical reviews. These figures are entered into the master file and will be incorporated into final results.

Digital Trends  passed over the recently released Sony Xperia TL, other choices were similar to other tech media outlets.  Like last year, DT rated Windows Phones highly with the HTC 8X one of its best rated devices. Smartphone makers that achieved the top scores were HTC with highest scores followed by Samsung, Motorola, Apple, LG and Nokia.

Consumer Reports is one of the few publications and organizations that does not accept advertising.  Consumer Reports claims that this makes their ranking impartial.  We reviewed Consumer Reports ratings for smartphones this year and found some surprises as well as similarities with technology media reviewers.

Update 12/18/2012 - We've rounded-up the 2012 results for best smartphone for T-Mobile, DT, HTC, LGDroid , Motorola, Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, trends, sales figures and the best for 2012.

Some things that Consumer Reports hold important are call quality, ability to play Flash, ability to create Microsoft Word and Excel documents, ability to use voice/data at the same time, ease of use, separate call buttons and removable batteries.

In previous years, Consumer Reports reviews were months behind online reviews.  The company has improved its speed of testing. This year we see only a few omissions of  newly released smartphones such as the Nokia Lumia 920, HTC 8X and Nexus 4.

Top Best SmartphonesNovember started off brisk holiday sales for all carriers, with the top seller the iPhone 5 for all carriers except T-Mobile where the Samsung Galaxy S III was the top seller, according to the latest report from Mike Walkley at Canaccord Genuity research. There's a new Samsung Galaxy device that is reaching the top three and that is the Samsung Galaxy Note II.

The top best smartphones of the fall of 2012 were represented by many manufacturers with Android the most mentioned operating system. The company checks stores over the country to find out the bestsellers.

For global sales, Walkely predicted with November checks showing strong sales and improved supply of iPhone 5 " combined with Apple’s aggressive iPhone 5 launch plans for the December quarter and solid legacy iPhone 4S/4 model sales, we anticipate 47.5M iPhone sales during the December quarter."

 Walkely reported "checks indicated mixed sales of new Windows Phone 8 smartphones, including the Nokia Lumia 920 at AT&T and HTC Windows 8X at AT&T/Verizon/T-Mobile."

Previously he predicted that in October the iPhone 5 will make a big come back with 4G LTE access and a larger form factor.

Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 2(II) Updated with Multi Window View

Galaxy Note II Update

Galaxy Note II UpdateSprint's Note II is receiveing an Android update  (L900VPALJC) that adds multiview and fixes some problems.  The update is being pushed out over time.

The update adds:

  • GPS lock settings can be defaulted by corporate device administrators
  • Emails go to Outbox when in no coverage area or airplane mode.
  • Text message notification will beep while in a voice call
  • -Multi Window View feature to run two apps on the screen at the same time.
